The FVPF has organized two volunteer opportunities over two days—October 7th and October 11th—to give back to the New Orleans community impacted by the recent devastating hurricanes. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your peers and give back to a community in need. Updated information! On Wednesday, October 7th Conference participants will volunteer with the St. Bernard Project, whose mission is to remove barriers for families who wish to move back into their homes in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. St. Bernard is a uniquely tight-knit, working/middle class community adjacent to New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward and is arguably the area hardest hit by hurricane Katrina. The St. Bernard Project, a nonprofit, community-based organization carries out its mission through three primary programs: Rebuilding Program, Center for Wellness and Mental Health and Senior Housing Program. A recent recipient of the CNN Heroes Award, St. Bernard’s Project has been working in the community since 2006. www.stbernardproject.org REGISTRATION FOR THIS DAY IS NOW CLOSED. If you already signed up for this activity and have any questions or concerns, please email Anna Marjavi anna@endabuse.org. Updated Information! On Sunday, October 11th Conference participants are invited to volunteer with HandsOn New Orleans, and the Bunny Friend Neighborhood Association. HandsOn New Orleans is a nonprofit organization helping to inspire and motivate people to meet critical community needs by encouraging active citizenship through meaningful service. Since Katrina and Rita, HandsOn New Orleans has mobilized over 11,000 volunteers to provide over 525,000 hours of service to the NOLA community. www.handsonneworleans.org. There has been a slight change of plans for our work with HandsOn. Our contribution is still greatly needed so we hope that this will not discourage any of you from participating. We had originally hoped to have a special project for our Conference group – perhaps working at a health clinic or domestic violence program – but due to logistical challenges, HandsOn has asked that we instead participate in a house painting project in the Upper Ninth Ward where a group of volunteers from the Bunny Friend Neighborhood Association has committed to painting ten homes. It is also a shorter work day – meet at 11am and return to the hotel around 2:30pm (transportation and lunch are provided). ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR THIS DAY IS NOW CLOSED. You may still register onsite at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. Please contact Anna Marjavi anna@endabuse.org with any questions. |
